Find a saint to help you on your journey
Saints are ordinary people who lived the Christian life so faithfully that the Church is confident they now see God face to face in heaven. They come from every walk of life; soldiers and scholars, mothers and beggars, teenagers and the elderly, and their struggles were as real as ours.
Why ask a saint, rather than simply praying to God directly? You can always go straight to God, and nothing replaces that. Asking a saint to pray for you is more like asking a friend to keep you in mind, except this friend is in the presence of God and may be better placed to know what you need. Their writings can help us to pray, and come closer to God.
The Church has been reflecting on the coming of Christ, and trying to live his message authentically, for more than two thousand years. That depth is a gift: whatever you are facing, someone has faced it before you. The lives of the saints can be a source of great grace to us. St Augustine lived more than fifteen hundred years ago and spent his youth far from God. His account of his seeking and finding God still touches hearts today.
"You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you." - St Augustine
